Psalm 2:7-8
This is a significant portion of Scripture. It speaks of an eternal decree and an ancient agreement within the Godhead. I believe it points to the so-called Covenant of Redemption wherein the Son promised to take on a human body, dwell on earth, redeem a people, and be glorified, and the Father was to deliver His Son and to receive glory from this redemption action.
We see several aspects of this covenant in these two verses.
This is the Messiah speaking about a secret decree that is being revealed to us in this psalm. Note that God does not have many decrees. He has one decree. That decree comes to pass and unfolds in linear time from our perspective. Yet, He established the decree from eternity past, and He is in the process of fully executing it. The King may be sitting on His throne, but He is far from inactive. He is ruling continually.
“Thou art my Son” is a statement of His deity.
“Today I have begotten Thee” points to the resurrection of Christ. See Acts 13:33 for confirmation of this.
The Messiah’s inheritance will be a people (the nations) as well as all of the creation (the very ends of the earth).
Finally, note that it is required that the Messiah must “ask of Me.” There needs to be a petition of request to the Father. He must pray and ask for such things. And he does. Messianic prayers and petitions are recorded throughout the Psalms. John 17 records such a prayer of request for His people.
If the Messiah is required to ask Him for blessings, how much more we?
